Could it be the incredible variety of color and markings, or simply the fact that people are a glutton for punishment (and love) that has moved the German shorthaired pointer into the top 20 dog breeds in the United States?  According to the AKC, German shorthairs were ranked 16 out of 156 recognized breeds.
